The Theatermaker
Reflecting on a Year of Creativity and Resilience
As the curtain falls on another remarkable year, I find myself compelled to reflect on the incredible journey as an independent theatermaker. 2023 has been a year of artistic exploration, storytelling, and, above all, a testament to the power of resilience and creativity.
Crafting Stories: Six Plays in Twelve Months
Embarking on the ambitious endeavor of writing and producing six plays in a single year has been both a challenge and a triumph. Each play has been a labor of love, a narrative woven from the fabric of diverse African experiences. From the drawing board to the stage, these productions have been a voyage of self-discovery and a celebration of the rich tapestry of our collective stories.
Interesting Facts:
I played a lead character in one of my plays this year. It was exhilarating.
I photographed and designed the poster for one of my summer plays (I designed (design) all the posters for my plays).
I wrote a chunk of the rap in AVND in the Subway.
Two of my projects premiered in new boroughs. Brooklyn and Queens!
A day before JAJA opened, I realized I had not gotten a crown for the character “Jaja,” so in the midst of arranging eight plastic bins of costumes, I wore a very light jacket, socks, and slides in hopes that I would find a crown at a party store a couple of blocks (25 mins) away from me. It was still a little bit chilly at this time. On getting to the store, they were out of crowns. I was left with two choices: walk back home to change my shoes and wear a heavy jacket or jump on a bus to the Bronx. After visiting two different stores in the Bronx, I finally found a crown.
The Heartfelt Thanks to Collaborators and Collaborations
No journey is ever taken alone, and I am immensely grateful for the collaboration and camaraderie that have shaped this year's theatrical endeavors. To the actors who breathed life into my words, the dedicated crew behind the scenes, and all those who lent their talents and support – your collaboration has been the heartbeat of these productions.
Navigating Challenges: Lessons Learned
While the stage is a space of magic and wonder, the journey to bring each play to life has not been without its challenges. From navigating logistical hurdles to adapting to unforeseen circumstances, every obstacle has been a lesson in resilience. It is through overcoming these challenges that the true spirit of creativity emerges, and I am grateful for the growth that accompanies adversity.
Connecting with Audiences: A Source of Joy
Theater, at its core, is a shared experience. Witnessing the emotional resonance of our plays with audiences has been the greatest reward. To everyone who attended, engaged, and became part of the stories we told on stage – thank you for being an essential part of this journey.
Looking Ahead: Embracing the Next Act
As I stand at the threshold of a new year, I am filled with anticipation for the stories yet to be told, the characters yet to be explored, and the artistic evolution that awaits. The creative journey is an ever-unfolding narrative, and I am excited to continue this odyssey with renewed passion and determination.
In conclusion, I express my deepest gratitude to everyone who has been a part of this year's theatrical adventures. May the coming year be filled with even more creativity, collaboration, and the enduring magic of the stage.
Here's to the next act!
Warm regards,
Taiwo Aloba
